RESUMO

Background: It is unclear whether serum calcium on admission is associated with clinical outcomes in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). In this study, we conducted a retrospective study spanning a decade to investigate the prognostic value of baseline calcium in elderly patients with DCM. Methods: A total of 1,089 consecutive elderly patients (age ≥60 years) diagnosed with DCM were retrospectively enrolled from January 2010 to December 2019. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to investigate the association of serum calcium with their clinical outcomes. Results: In this study, the average age of the subjects was 68.36 ± 6.31 years. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that serum calcium level had a great sensitivity and specificity for predicting in-hospital death, with an AUC of 0.732. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that patients with a serum calcium >8.62 mg/dL had a better prognosis than those with a serum calcium ≤8.62 mg/dL (log-rank χ2 40.84, p < 0.001). After adjusting for several common risk factors, a serum calcium ≤8.62 mg/dL was related to a higher risk of long-term mortality (HR: 1.449; 95% CI: 1.115~1.882; p = 0.005). Conclusions: Serum calcium level could be served as a simple and affordable tool to evaluate patients' prognosis in DCM.

RESUMO

AIMS: Hypoalbuminemia was extensively used to diagnose malnutrition in older adults. Malnutrition was associated with mortality in elderly patients with cardiovascular diseases. The relationship between hypoalbuminemia and clinical outcomes in elderly patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NIDCM) remains unknown. METHODS: A total of 1058 consecutive patients with NIDCM (age ≥60 years) were retrospectively enrolled from January 2010 to December 2019. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the association of hypoalbuminemia with clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Patients with hypoalbuminemia were older (69.29 ±â€Š6.67 vs. 67.61 ±â€Š5.90 years, P  < 0.001) and had higher prevalence of in-hospital and long-term death than those without (6.9 vs. 1.7%, 50.7 vs. 35.2%, P  < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that hypoalbuminemia was significantly related to in-hospital death [odds ratio (OR): 4.334, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.185-8.597, P  < 0.001]. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that patients with hypoalbuminemia had worse prognosis than those with nonhypoalbuminemia (log-rank χ2 28.96, P  < 0.001). After adjusting for age, serum creatinine, HDL-C, AST/ALT hypoalbuminemia, LVEF and diabetes, hypoalbuminemia remained an independent predictor for long-term death (hazard ratio 1.322, 95% CI 0.046-1.670, P  = 0.019). CONCLUSION: Hypoalbuminemia was associated with increased risk of in-hospital and long-term mortality in elderly patients with NIDCM.

RESUMO

Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB), caused by "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" (CLas), is the most destructive disease threatening global citrus industry. Most commercial cultivars were susceptible to HLB, although some showed tolerant to HLB phenotypically. Identifying tolerant citrus genotypes and understanding the mechanism correlated with tolerance to HLB is essential for breeding citrus variety tolerance/resistance to HLB. In this study, the graft assay with CLas-infected bud were performed in four citrus genotypes, including Citrus reticulata Blanco, C. sinensis, C. limon, and C. maxima. HLB tolerance was observed in C. limon and C. maxima, while C. Blanco and C. sinensis were susceptible to HLB. The time-course transcriptomic analysis revealed a significant variation in differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to HLB between susceptible and tolerant cultivar group at early and late infection stage. Functional analysis of DEGs indicated that the activation of genes involved in SA-mediated defense response, PTI, cell wall associated immunity, endochitinase, phenylpropanoid and alpha-linolenic/linoleic lipid metabolism played an important in the tolerance of C. limon and C. maxima to HLB at early infection stage. In addition, the overactive plant defense combined with the stronger antibacterial activity (antibacterial secondary and lipid metabolism) and the suppression of pectinesterase were contributed to the long-term tolerance to HLB in C. limon and C. maxima at late infection stage. Particularly, the activation of ROS scavenging genes (catalases and ascorbate peroxidases) could help to reduce HLB symptoms in tolerant cultivars. In contrast, the overexpression of genes involved in oxidative burst and ethylene metabolism, as well as the late inducing of defense related genes could lead to the early HLB symptom development in susceptible cultivars at early infection stage. The weak defense response and antibacterial secondary metabolism, and the induce of pectinesterase were responsible for sensitivity to HLB in C. reticulata Blanco and C. sinensis at late infection stage. This study provided new insights into the tolerance/sensitivity mechanism against HLB and valuable guidance for breeding of HLB-tolerant/resistant cultivars.

RESUMO

"Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" is one of the putative causal agents of citrus Huanglongbing (HLB), a highly destructive disease threatening the global citrus industry. Several types of phages had been identified in "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" strains and found to affect the biology of "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus." However, little is known about the influence of phages in "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" pathogenicity. In this study, two "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" strains, PYN and PGD, harboring different types of phages were collected and used for pathogenicity analysis in periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus). Strain PYN carries a type 1 phage (P-YN-1), and PGD harbors a type 2 phage (P-GD-2). Compared to strain PYN, strain PGD exhibited a faster reproduction rate and higher virulence in periwinkle: leaf symptoms appeared earlier, and there was a stronger inhibition in the growth of new flush. Estimation of phage copy numbers by type-specific PCR indicated that there are multiple copies of phage P-YN-1 in strain PYN, while strain PGD carries only a single copy of phage P-GD-2. Genome-wide gene expression profiling revealed the lytic activity of P-YN-1 phage, as evidenced by the unique expression of genes involved in lytic cycle, which may limit the propagation of strain PYN and lead to a delayed infection in periwinkle. However, the activation of genes involved in lysogenic conversion of phage P-GD-1 indicated it could reside within the "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" genome as a prophage form in strain PGD. Comparative transcriptome analysis showed that the significant differences in expression of virulence factor genes, including genes associated with pathogenic effectors, transcriptional factors, the Znu transport system, and the heme biosynthesis pathway, could be another major determinant of virulence variation between two "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" strains. This study expanded our knowledge of "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" pathogenicity and provided new insights into the differences in pathogenicity between "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" strains. IMPORTANCE Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB), also called citrus greening disease, is a highly destructive disease threatening citrus production worldwide. "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" is one of the most common putative causal agents of HLB. Phages of "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" have recently been identified and found to affect "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" biology. Here, we found that "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" strains harboring different types of phages (type 1 or type 2) showed different levels of pathogenicity and multiplication patterns in the periwinkle plant (Catharanthus roseus). Transcriptome analysis revealed the possible lytic activity of type 1 phage in a "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" strain, which could limit the propagation of "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" and lead to the delayed infection in periwinkle. The heterogeneity in the transcriptome profiles, particularly the significant differences in expression of virulence factors genes, could be another major determinant of difference in virulence observed between the two "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" strains. These findings improved our understanding of "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus"-phage interaction and provided insight into "Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus" pathogenicity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vascular calcification during aging is highly prevalent in patients with cardiovascular disease; however, there is still no improvement in clarifying the development of vascular calcification. FOSL1 is a transcription regulator belonging to the AP-1 family, which has a unique function in vascular senescence, but its role in vascular calcification needs to be further explored. METHODS: Primary mouse vascular smooth muscle cells were isolated and used to construct a calcification model in vitro. Seven-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were used to build the vitD3-induced calcification model in vivo. qRT-PCR and western blot were used to verify the expression of FOSL1 and other genes expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells and aortas. The level of calcification was determined by Alizarin Red S (ARS) staining and the calcium content assay. The level of cellular GSH was detected by the GSH assay kit. RESULTS: Here, we report that FOSL1 was up-regulated after high-calcium/phosphate treatment in both the in vivo and in vitro vascular calcification models. Functional studies have shown that the reduction of FOSL1 attenuates ferroptosis and calcification in vascular smooth muscle cells, as indicated by ARS staining, calcium content assay, and western blot. The inhibition of FOSL1 downregulated the expression of bone-related molecules including Msh Homeobox 2 (MSX2) and tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, member 11b/osteoprotegerin (OPG), suggesting that FOSL1 promoted osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Furthermore, we found that the ferroptosis-inducing drug erastin can significantly accelerate calcification in the aortic ring while Ferrostatin-1 (fer-1), a drug to protect cells from ferroptosis, can alleviate calcification. Further experiments have shown that inhibiting FOSL1 can promote the expression of ferroptosis-related genes and attenuate calcification. Functionally, cellular GSH levels were increased after the reduction of FOSL1. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we observed a significant protective effect when we reduced the expression of FOSL1 during vascular calcification, and this effect might regulate ferroptosis to a great extent.

RESUMO

Countries all over the world are looking for fuel to replace fossil energy due to environmental concerns and a scarcity of fossil fuels. Oil shale (OS) and rice husk (RH) are both viable fuels, although they both have issues like high ash content and poor calorific value. OS and RH were used as feedstock for high-quality fuel in this study, which uses a hydrothermal technique to provide a novel way to utilize OS and rice. At different hydrothermal temperatures (150, 200 and 250 °C), including combustion and pyrolysis processes, the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) was used to analyse thermal transformation characteristics of co-hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC) of OS and RH, as well as the synergistic effects. Results showed that the co-HTC pretreatment had a significant effect on the thermal transformation behaviour of OS and RH. On the one hand, the co-HTC has higher volatile content than its calculated value. On the other hand, a synergistic effect was found in combustion processes, and this effect was the most obvious when the hydrothermal temperature was around 200 °C, and the characteristic peak of functional groups vibration was strong. Therefore, the co-HTC was considered suitable for combustion. The combination of co-HTC modification with subsequent thermochemical processes has positive implications for the energy production and utilization of organic waste.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NIDCM) is a heterogeneous disease, and patients still have high risk of sudden cardiac death even after receiving treatment. The Selvester QRS score and the ESTIMATED score reported as predictors contain many variables and are complex to calculate. There is a need for a simple predictive score to accurately assess prognosis in clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 953 elderly patients (age ≥60 years) diagnosed with NIDCM were enrolled from January 2010 to December 2019. In-hospital and long-term outcomes were studied. RESULTS: Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that the AGEF score was associated with in-hospital mortality (OR: 1.828; 95% CI: 1.559-2.144; p < 0.001). Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis showed that the AGEF score was excellent at predicting clinical outcomes. The optimal cutoff value of the AGEF score for predicting long-term mortality was 2.50 (AUC = 0.743; 95% CI: 0.710-0.776; p < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that patients with an AGEF score >2.50 had a worse prognosis than those with an AGEF score ≤2.50 (log-rank χ2 103.69, p < 0.001). Moreover, multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis showed that an AGEF score ≤2.50 was associated with a lower risk of long-term mortality in elderly patients with NIDCM (HR: 0.405; 95% CI: 0.310-0.529; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The AGEF score could be considered as a simple and useful tool for risk stratification in elderly patients with NIDCM.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia is a common disease during pregnancy that leads to fetal and maternal adverse events. Few head-to-head clinical trials are currently comparing the effectiveness of prophylactic strategies for preeclampsia. In this network meta-analysis, we aimed to compare the efficacy of prophylactic strategies for preventing preeclampsia in pregnant women at risk. DATA SOURCES: Articles published in or before September 2021 from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov, references of key articles, and previous meta-analyses were manually searched. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials comparing prophylactic strategies preventing preeclampsia with each other or with negative controls were included. METHODS: Two reviewers independently extracted data, assessed the risk of bias, and assessed evidence certainty. The efficacy of prophylactic strategies was estimated by frequentist and Bayesian network meta-analysis models. The primary composite outcome was preeclampsia/ pregnancy-induced hypertension. RESULTS: In total, 130 trials with a total of 112,916 patients were included to assess 13 prophylactic strategies. Low-molecular-weight heparin (0.60; 95% confidence interval, 0.42-0.87), vitamin D supplementation (0.65; 95% confidence interval, 0.45-0.95), and exercise (0.68; 95% confidence interval, 0.50-0.92) were as efficacious as calcium supplementation (0.71; 95% confidence interval, 0.62-0.82) and aspirin (0.79; 95% confidence interval, 0.72-0.86) in preventing preeclampsia/pregnancy-induced hypertension, with a P score ranking of 85%, 79%, 76%, 74%, and 61%, respectively. In the head-to-head comparison, no differences were found between these effective prophylactic strategies for preventing preeclampsia and pregnancy-induced hypertension, except with regard to exercise, which tended to be superior to aspirin and calcium supplementation in preventing pregnancy-induced hypertension. Furthermore, the prophylactic effects of aspirin and calcium supplementation were robust across subgroups. However, the prophylactic effects of low-molecular-weight heparin, exercise, and vitamin D supplementation on preeclampsia and pregnancy-induced hypertension varied with different risk populations, dosages, areas, etc. The certainty of the evidence was moderate to very low. CONCLUSION: Low-molecular-weight heparin, vitamin D supplementation, exercise, calcium supplementation, and aspirin reduce the risk of preeclampsia/pregnancy-induced hypertension. No significant differences between effective prophylactic strategies were found in preventing preeclampsia. These findings raise the necessity to reevaluate the prophylactic effects of low-molecular-weight heparin, vitamin D supplementation, and exercise on preeclampsia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Serum chloride has a unique homeostatic role in modulating neurohormonal pathways. Some studies have reported that hypochloremia has potential prognostic value in cardiovascular diseases; thus, we aimed to investigate the association of baseline serum chloride with clinical outcomes in elderly patients with non-ischaemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NIDCM). DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANT: A total of 1088 patients (age ≥60 years) diagnosed with NIDCM were enrolled from January 2010 to December 2019. RESULTS: Logistic regression analyses showed that serum chloride was significantly associated with in-hospital death. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses showed that serum chloride had excellent prognostic ability for in-hospital and long-term death (area under the curve (AUC)=0.690 and AUC=0.710, respectively). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the patients with hypochloremia had worse prognoses than those without hypochloremia (log-rank χ2=56.69, p<0.001). After adjusting for age, serum calcium, serum sodium, left ventricular ejection fraction, lg NT-proBNP and use of diuretics, serum chloride remained an independent predictor of long-term death (HR 0.934, 95% CI 0.913 to 0.954, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Serum chloride concentration was a prognostic indicator in elderly patients with NIDCM, and hypochloremia was significantly associated with both in-hospital and long-term poor outcomes.

RESUMO

Background: Previous Study Found That Implantation of a Cardioverter-Defibrillator Likely Caused a Worse Prognosis in Older Patients With non-Ischemic Systolic Heart Failure. This Suggests That More Precise Risk Stratification Is Needed in Elderly Patients. We Conducted a Retrospective Study to Evaluate the Association of α-Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase (α-HBDH) With Mortality During Hospitalization in Elderly Patients With non-Ischemic Dilated Cardiomyopathy (NIDCM). Methods: 1,019 Elderly Patients (age ≥60 Years) Diagnosed With NIDCM Were Retrospectively Enrolled From January 2010 to December 2019. Univariate and Multivariate Analyses Were Showed to Explore the Relationship Between α-HBDH and in- Hospital Death. Results: Patients in elevated α-HBDH group (>182 U/L) had a longer hospital stays and higher in-hospital mortality. Univariate logistics regression analysis showed that elevated α-HBDH was significantly related to mortality (OR: 7.004, 95% CI: 3.583-13.693, p < 0.001). Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis reflected that α-HBDH levels had excellent predictive power for in-hospital death (AUC = 0.810, 95% CI: 0.745-0.876, p < 0.001). After adjustment of age, serum creatine, albumin and LVEF, multivariate regression analysis validated the association of elevated α-HBDH with increased risk of in-hospital death (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Elevated α-HBDH level is significantly related to in-hospital mortality in older patients with NIDCM.

RESUMO

Background: The serum uric acid/albumin ratio (sUAR), a novel inflammatory marker, effectively predicts acute kidney injury (AKI) and cardiovascular outcomes. However, whether the sUAR predicts post-contrast acute kidney injury (PC-AKI) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains uncertain. In this study, we evaluated the association between the sUAR and PC-AKI in patients with STEMI undergoing PCI. Methods: We consecutively recruited patients with STEMI who underwent PCI and stratified them into three groups according to the terciles of the sUAR. The primary outcome was the incidence of PC-AKI. The association between the sUAR and PC-AKI was assessed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 2861 patients with STEMI were included in this study. The incidence of PC-AKI increased stepwise with increasing sUAR tercile (2.6% vs 4.0% vs 11.6%, p < 0.001), and the incidence of in-hospital major adverse clinical events (MACEs) was highest among patients in the Q3 group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the sUAR was also an independent predictor of PC-AKI (continuous sUAR, per 1-unit increase, odds ratio [OR] [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 1.06 [1.02-1.10], p = 0.005; tercile of sUAR, OR [95% CI] for Q2 and Q3: 1.18 [0.69-2.01] and 1.85 [1.12-3.06], respectively, with Q1 as a reference) but not in-hospital MACEs. In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) of the sUAR for predicting PC-AKI was 0.708 (95% CI: 0.666-0.751), and ROC analysis also showed that the sUAR was superior to uric acid and albumin alone in predicting PC-AKI. Conclusion: Increasing sUAR was significantly associated with a higher risk of PC-AKI but not in-hospital MACEs in patients with STEMI who underwent PCI, suggesting that sUAR had a predictive value for PC-AKI after PCI in patients with STEMI. Further studies are required to confirm this finding.

RESUMO

The effects of hydrothermal temperature and catalyst concentration on the basic elements and combustion characteristics and kinetic parameters of hydrochars were investigated using ultimate analyzer and thermogravimetric method with rice husk as the research object and CaO as the additives. The results showed that: (1) the fixed carbon content of hydrochars gradually increased with the increase of hydrothermal temperature, whereas the volatile content gradually decreased. When CaO was added, the changes of fixed carbon and volatile fraction gradually decreased with the increase of hydrothermal temperature, and H/C atomic ratio increased to different degrees, which had a certain inhibitory effect on the degree of hydrothermal carbonization of rice husk. (2) The peak of the volatile fraction combustion section of hydrochars combustion derivative thermogravimetric curve was higher than that of the fixed carbon combustion section. CaO concentration has less effect on the volatile combustion section, and the combustion peak of the fixed carbon section is significantly reduced. (3) When the heating rate of the combustion test is accelerated, the ignition and burnout temperatures of the sample increase and the overall combustion curve shifts to the high temperature region. (4) The comprehensive combustion index SN decreases with the increase in hydrothermal temperature. When the hydrothermal temperature is certain, the CaO concentration causes the SN to increase and then decrease, which finally reduces the combustion performance of hydrochars. (5) The activation energy of the fixed carbon combustion section of hydrochars is lower than that of the volatile combustion section, and the activation energy of both volatile and fixed carbon combustion sections gradually decreases after adding CaO. The primary reaction kinetic model was used to describe the combustion kinetics of hydrochars, and the correlation coefficients (R2) were all above 0.92, and the results were reliable.

RESUMO

Background: Myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is still a major challenge in clinical treatment. The role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) in the regulation of myocardial I/R injury still needs to be elucidated. Methods: The primary isolated neonatal mousse cardiomyocytes and adult mice were used to construct a myocardial ischemia-reperfusion model. qRT-PCR is used to verify gene expression in myocardial tissue and myocardial cells. The effect of AK035396 in primary cardiomyocytes and mouse myocardium was confirmed by TUNEL staining and in vitro flow cytometry experiments. RNA pulldown and Western blot were used to identify AK035396 interacting proteins. The expression of apoptosis-related proteins was identified by qRT-PCR and Western blot. Results: In vivo and in vitro MIRI models, AK035396 was up-regulated after myocardial infarction. Functional studies have shown that knockdown of AK035396 reduces the apoptosis of primary cardiomyocytes and mouse myocardial tissue. AK035396 directly interacts with Mterf1 and inhibits the level of Mterf1. Further experiments have shown that inhibiting Mterf1 will promote the expression of mitochondrial genes COXII and CYTb and cause cell apoptosis. Conclusion: AK035396 plays an important role in myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury by regulating the Mterf1-COXII/CYTb pathway.

RESUMO

"Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" (CLas) is an unculturable phloem-limited α-proteobacterium associated with citrus Huanglongbing (HLB; yellow shoot disease). HLB is currently threatening citrus production worldwide. Understanding the CLas biology is critical for HLB management. In this study, a novel single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) phage, CLasMV1, was identified in a CLas strain GDHZ11 from Guangdong Province of China through a metagenomic analysis. The CLasMV1 phage had a circular genome of 8,869 bp with eight open reading frames (ORFs). While six ORFs remain uncharacterized, ORF6 encoded a replication initiation protein (RIP), and ORF8 encoded a major capsid protein (MCP). Based on BLASTp search against GenBank database, amino acid sequences of both MCP and RIP shared similarities (coverage > 50% and identity > 25%) to those of phages in Microviridae, an ssDNA phage family. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that CLasMV1 MCP and RIP sequences were clustered with genes from CLas and "Ca. L. solanacearum" (CLso) genomes and formed a unique phylogenetic lineage, designated as a new subfamily Libervirinae, distinct to other members in Microviridae family. No complete integration form but partial sequence (∼1.9 kb) of CLasMV1 was found in the chromosome of strain GDHZ11. Read-mapping analyses on additional 15 HiSeq data sets of CLas strains showed that eight strains harbored complete CLasMV1 sequence with variations in single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and small sequence insertions/deletions (In/Dels). PCR tests using CLasMV1-specific primer sets detected CLasMV1 in 577 out of 1,006 CLas strains (57%) from southern China. This is the first report of Microviridae phage associated with CLas, which expands our understanding of phage diversity in CLas and facilitates current research in HLB.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Frequent freeze-thaw phenomena, together with widely used deicing salt and intense acid precipitation, often occur in northeastern China, causing damage to various aspects of plants, such as the permeability of biological membranes, osmotic adjustment, and photosystems. Aiming to explore the resistance of alfalfa to freezing-thawing (F), acid precipitation (A) and deicing salt (D), this study used Medicago sativa cv. Dongmu-70 as the experimental material, and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), soluble protein, soluble sugars, proline and chlorophyll were evaluated. RESULTS: As the temperature decreased, the MDA content in the seedlings of the group under combined stress (A-D-F) increased and was significantly higher than that of group F (by 69.48 ~ 136.40%). Compared with those in the control (CK) group, osmotic substances such as soluble sugars and proline in the treatment groups were higher, while the soluble protein content was lower. The chlorophyll contents in the seedlings of the treatment groups were lower than those of the CK group; however, the chlorophyll content displayed a non-significant change during the free-thaw cycle. CONCLUSION: Injury to the permeability of the biological membranes and photosystems of alfalfa results from stress. Moreover, alfalfa maintains osmotic balance by adaptively increasing the potential of osmotic substances such as soluble sugars and proline.
